Machiya Cafe
町家カフェ 檸檬
Machiya Cafe in Sanjo Inokumacho, Kyoto, pairs fragrant citrus chiffon cakes and caramelized brûlée slices with lunchtime plates of obanzai, fresh yuba, and grilled salmon bubuzuke, all in a tranquil townhouse setting.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Tucked along a side street in Sanjo Inokumacho, Machiya Cafe is known first and foremost for its delicately textured, airy chiffon cakes. The signature Lemon cake incorporates organic lemon peel sourced from Limone on Omishima island, giving each bite an invigorating citrus edge complemented by a dollop of fresh cream. Alongside a straightforward plain version made with domestic wheat flour and rice bran oil, the lineup extends to matcha, banana, and rotating seasonal flavors. Diners eating in can also opt for a brûlée chiffon cake, where the surface is torched into a crisp, caramelized crust.
Beyond baked sweets, the cafe offers a substantial savoury menu. Lunch sets arrive with 3 daily obanzai side dishes, accompanying main choices like bubuzuke layered with fresh yuba (tofu skin) and grilled salmon, pasta in tomato sauce with shrimp and eggplant, or a hearty vegetable and mushroom curry. A mini crème brûlée and a cup of tea often round off the meal, making for a modest yet thoughtfully composed midday spread.
The interior follows the classic Kyoto machiya blueprint: a long, narrow floor plan with counter seats near the entrance, table seating farther in, and glimpses of a petite tsuboniwa courtyard garden at the rear. Operated by a welcoming husband-and-wife team, the room carries a calm, unhurried air suited to solo visitors looking for a quiet afternoon respite. Takeaway chiffon slices are also on hand, making it easy to bring a treat along after wandering around Sanjo-dori.
